Update: West Nile Virus (WNV) - Italy

The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care was informed by the ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) that in Italy, during the current season, a total of 228 human WNV infections were recorded. 13 deaths were reported related to WNV infections. Affected regions are: Vercelli, Novara, Lodi, Piacenza, Parma, Reggio nell'Emilia, Modena, Mantova, Brescia, Verona, Padova, Venezia, Rovigo, Ferrara, Ravenna, Treviso, Torino, Asti, Cremona, Bologna, Pordenone, Alessandria, Milano, Vicenza, Udine and Pistoia. In addition, birds and horses tested positive for WNV NAT.

Therefore, appropriate attention is requested in the anamnesis interviews and donor selections.
