Christa Wirthumer-Hoche elected Chairwoman of the EMA Management Board
At the European Medicines Agency (EMA) Management Board meeting in London on March 17, 2016, Christa Wirthumer-Hoche was elected Chair of the EMA Management Board for a three-year term.
DI Dr. Wirthumer-Hoche is Head of AGES Medical Market Surveillance and has held this position since October 2013. She has served as vice chair of the EMA Management Board since March 2015. She is co-chair of the EU Network Training Centers (EU-NTC), which was launched in January 2015, and chair of the Active Substance Master File Working Group. She received her PhD from the Vienna University of Technology and holds a diploma in chemistry and biochemistry.
"It is a great honor for me to be appointed Chair of the EMA Management Board," said DI Dr. Wirthumer-Hoche after accepting the election. "As chair, my goal is to ensure a strong partnership between the EMA, national competent authorities and the European Commission to ensure that the EMA continues to be able to fulfill its important role in protecting human and animal health in Europe."
EMA Executive Director Guido Rasi, said, "I am very pleased to welcome DI Dr. Wirthumer-Hoche as the new Chair of the EMA Management Board. As Vice Chair of the Management Board, she has already proven that she has the vision and leadership qualities for this important role. I look forward to working closely with her.
DI Dr. Wirthumer-Hoche had already been a member of the Management Board since October 2013. She succeeds Sir Kent Woods, who stepped down as Chairman of the EMA Management Board in December 2015.
The Management Board sets the budget of the Medicines Agency, approves the annual work program, and is responsible for ensuring that the Agency works and cooperates effectively and successfully with partner organizations in and outside the EU.
