Registration for applicants from mail-order pharmacies
As of June 25, 2015, Austrian public pharmacies are permitted to dispense medicinal products for human use by means of distance selling in accordance with Section 59 para. 10 no. 1 and para. 11 of the Austrian Medicines Act (AMG) if they meet the requirements of Section 59a para. 2 and 3 AMG.
From January 28, 2022, the dispensing of veterinary medicinal products by means of distance selling is permitted in accordance with Article 104 of Regulation (EU) 2019/6 on veterinary medicinal products.
The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) is responsible for enforcing the provisions regarding the registration and supervision of public pharmacies that offer medicinal products for human use for sale to the public by means of distance selling.
The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) is responsible for enforcing the provisions concerning the registration and supervision of public pharmacies or dispensing outlets that offer veterinary medicinal products for sale to the public by means of distance selling.
The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH, Medical Market Surveillance Division, Institute for Surveillance is responsible for the operational implementation of the monitoring.

Distance selling of veterinary medicinal specialties
According to § 50 of the Veterinary Medicinal Products Act as amended (TAMG, Federal Law Gazette I. No. 186/2023), only authorized or registered veterinary medicinal specialties may be sold at a distance in Austria. The sale of prescription-only veterinary medicinal specialties by distance selling is prohibited.
Veterinary medicinal specialties dispensed by distance selling may only be dispatched in a quantity corresponding to the usual requirements for the respective animal species, and must be
- packaged, transported and delivered in such a way that their quality and efficacy are not impaired, and
- demonstrably handed over to the person who was notified by the person placing the order of the person entitled to dispense.
A distance selling regulation for veterinary medicinal specialties, which regulates the specific requirements for dispensing, is currently being drafted.
Notification of distance selling of veterinary medicinal specialties to the BASG
Persons authorized to supply veterinary medicinal specialties in the retail trade within the meaning of § 49 TAMG as amended, who intend to offer veterinary medicinal specialties by means of distance selling, must inform the BASG before commencing their activities, stating
- the name of the authorized person and
- the address,
- the date of commencement of the activity and
- the address of the websites used for this purpose, including all details for their identification.

Veterinary medicinal products for pets within the meaning of § 6 para. 2 subpara. 1 TAMG as amended may only be traded at a distance after registration by the distributor or the manufacturer in the register pursuant to § 24 TAMG as amended.
Exemption from notification of distance selling of veterinary medicinal specialties to the BASG
Public pharmacies that have already notified their activities to the BASG in accordance with Section 59a para. 2 AMG as amended are exempt from the obligation to notify.
Registration with eServices
If the distance selling of veterinary medicinal specialties has not yet been registered with eService, the initial registration must be carried out first. If an initial registration for the distance selling of human medicinal specialties has already been carried out, a further initial registration for the distance selling of veterinary medicinal specialties is no longer necessary.
Notification of the intended commencement of distance selling of veterinary medicinal specialties
An informal application must be sent to the Monitoring Institute via inspektionen@basg.gv.at for the notification of distance selling of veterinary medicinal specialties. This can only be submitted to eServices after the initial registration described above.
